Angelique Kerber Wins US Open, Becomes No. 1 Female Tennis Player
The 28-year-old from Bremen claimed the opening set, grabbing an early lead with only three unforced errors in the opener. “It’s just amazing. I won my second Grand Slam of the year and it’s the best year of my career. For me, everything started here in 2011 and here, five years later I’m standing with the trophy,” she mentioned in an interview with Deutsche Welle.
Kerber’s victory marks her first US Open title and second Grand Slam trophy of her breakthrough season. She is the first German woman to win the US Open since Steffi Graf in 1996. Kerber replaces American powerhouse Serena Williams, who held the top position in the Women’s Tennis Association (WTA) for three-and-a-half years with a 210-21 record.
