Days after the heir presumptive to the Austro-Hungarian throne, Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria and his wife, Sophie, Duchess of Hohenberg, were shot dead in Sarajevo, Serbia, on June 28, 1914.
On July 28, 2014, Emperor Franz Joseph of Austria-Hungary declares war on Serbia which led to Russia, a Serbian ally, to announce mobilization of all her armed forces on July 31, 2014. Germany mobilized all armed forces in order to support the Austria-Hungary and declared war on Russia on August 1 and on France on August 3. World War I started which would continue until November 11, 1918.
The attack against Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria and his wife,was coordinated by a group of six assassins with one being successful.
On July 3, the German parliament, the Bundestag, recognized the 100th anniversary of the start of World War I. Guest speaker Alfred Grosser, a German-born French political scientist, reiterated that Germany was not solely at fault for the war.
