A member of the Bundestag, one-time party chairman of the Social Democrats, and Federal Minister of Defense, Economics and Finance under Willy Brandt, Schmidt was known for his eloquence and ready wit. He was an engaging speaker as a politician and later as co-publisher of Die Zeit and as a private citizen on the lecture circuit. Regardless of party affiliations, people seemed to esteem Schmidt and respect his opinions as former Chancellor.
